A Walk in The Park | Snippet in the life of Tiiu, Dale, and their kids

I have been photographing Tiiu and Dale’s family for several years now. The very first time I saw them, Tiiu was still pregnant with her daughter. It's been a joy to watch the kids grow, and develop personalities. So much personality!

This particular session was the beginning of fall, and appropriately drizzly. In fact, we were wondering whether we could even make this session work, because there was a threat of rain.

But I'm happy that we did make it work, because the rain did not materialize. So I joined them and we went for a walk to a couple of nearby parks.

I love the place that they live in Kingston. It's near so much water, with many parks & green spaces for the kids to play. And the grass! It was still so vibrantly green in early October. Boy, do I miss that colour.

We threw rocks in the lake, and the kids ran around finding cool things like shells, and a dead fish. Yikes!

I love how their coats injected so much colour into the otherwise grey landscape. Fall can sometimes be dreary, but with this family it was anything but.

A quick aside about colour versus black & white photographs. I always love and prefer editing photographs in colour. All the photographs in this gallery are in colour. It's not that they wouldn't have looked great in black & white, they probably would. But I love the vivid colours, because they show just how loudly and vibrantly children live their lives. Lives are filled with happy and intense moments, just like the colours in these photographs.

When I’m photographing indoors, with a mixture of light sources, it’s often more appropriate to edit in black & white. Sometimes that’s the only way you can really remove the distracting hues of indoor lighting.

Or sometimes, when the emotion is loud enough, the colour distracts, making it is appropriate for me to edit in black & white. But I do this sparingly.

After the park we went back to their home. They have a pool which they were just about to close, so of course we had to take one last dip!

I was focussing on jumping shots of the kids here, but also their wonderful expressions of joy while in the water.

It’s going to be months before diving in here again, so we made the most of these last days of summer weather.

Oh, and can you believe that these photographs were all taken in less than 1 hour? Yep, I kid you not.

A sixty minute session is often enough to capture a family of four doing one or two nearby activities. Any more than that, and I’d suggest you go for a slightly longer session.

The most important takeaway here is: whatever you decide to do with your family - whatever is meaningful (a walk in the park, a dip in the pool, or anything else) - it CAN be turned into memories that you’ll enjoy forever. Which reminds me to book a photo session for my own family. The problem is that I have so many local photographers to choose from… a great problem to have!
