Year In The Life: Apple Picking At Wynn Farms

In the last three weeks, I’ve been to Wynn Farms three times.

Two of them, it was raining.

Once was on location with my ‘year in the life’ family.

As you might recall, their ‘YEAR IN THE LIFE’ photography started way back in 2020, but because of pandemics and colds and lockdowns, we had to skip meeting up - sometimes for months at a time!

The good that came out of this is that I’ve been able to photograph them for more than two years now, and document the kids growing.

Particularly Theo, who was just a wee baby when we started. (I actually also photographed his birth, though it wasn’t part of the Year in the Life photography package).

At Wynn Farms, there’s lots to do.

You can take a photo on a cute little cut-out mural on which the kids can poke their heads through and pretend they’re a farmer on a tractor, or a case of apples.

You can pick apples, of course.

There are multiple rows of apple trees to choose from. Sometimes they tell you which trees are ready, and which to avoid.

Under the trees, you’ll see lots of fallen apples. Those ones always look more delicious to me, for some reason. Maybe because they’re more red in colour, because they’ve been sitting there, ripening off the tree? I don’t know.

Picking apples also entails running through the rows of trees, or switching between one row to another. You can take photos as the kids are peeking behind a treet.

And then, you can go through the orchard all the way to the back and pick pumpkins… The back fields are filled with all sorts of pumpkins - big and small, orange, green, and white - and gourds!

You have to be careful not to step on a vine and trip up.

You can find teeny tiny worms, also. This is what Theo did. He was fascinated by the little worm, and held it up, fearless. (I am, by contrast, very afraid of worms. Maybe ‘afraid’ isn’t the right word. I find them… gross. Even though I love them and all they do for our Earth. Just don’t ask me to hold one. 🤮)

Finally, you can purchase a candied apple, or some hot cider, and you can sit by the fire up front and get cosy and warm.

This is particularly helpful on a rainy and dreary day, such as the day we went apple picking with the Timmermans.

All in all, this was one super fun little apple picking session. And now we can compare it to the last time they took me there, two years ago :)

Can you believe how much Theo has grown?! 😍

A “year in the life” photography package isn’t for everyone.

It is an investment, for sure.

It means that we can get together multiple times a year (12 is the suggested amount, once per month, but really any amount works!) and document the growth of your children, especially if they’re in particularly dynamic parts of their childhoods (e.g. transition from toddler to preschooler, transition from early childhood to adolescence, etc).

These sessions can take place any time or location, and they can also involve travel: to your cottage, to the beach, or a rink somewhere in Ontario :)

There’s no pressure to do anything but be yourselves.

And watch the memories roll in.
