Sarah’s mom, Ana, the matriarch of this family, approached me years ago to plan this photo-session, but because of timing issues (and later, Covid), it took us until this July to make it happen.

The idea was: document the family’s stay at their summer cottage, on Grippen lake.

I’ve been there before, because I’ve photographed their neighbors a bunch of times in years past. It’s a gorgeous place. Private, pristine, quiet…

And in mid-summer, that gorgeous green of the trees, coupled with the deep blue of the lake…

It makes for the most stunning backdrop to whatever candid photos we end up making.

There were just a few must-have photos on Sarah’s list:

• the big table behind their cottage, where there is always food

• Photos of Sarah with her two kiddos - she is so rarely in the photo with her boys!

• Photos of all the kids playing together

• Photos of Vóvó (grandma) with her children and grandchildren ❤️

And in just an hour and a half, we achieved these photographs, and so much more!

I’m sharing with you simply a few snippets here, to give you an idea of the fun that we had that Sunday morning.

There was playing in the lake, lounging on the hammock… and jumping off the dock.

Uncle Ben found a little fish with the fishnet!

And Max, the pup, got some loving pets (and also swam any chance he got.)

I loved how easy and carefree this family was: this is truly their happy place.

Sarah’s family are going to put the album I’ll design for them right at the cottage. That way, when they gather there over the next years and decades, they can always look back on those sunny summer memories, from 2022.

The passage of time is one of those things that… well, we can’t do much about.

But reliving our most special memories - whether it’s frolicking in the water on a beach somewhere, or eating grapes from a picnic table in the backyard… Being able to recall the emotions from that same moment is absolutely within our power. It’s the most special gift time gives us.
